I’ve already talked about the changing needs of our skin as we head later into our 30’s and then into our 40’s and beyond when I wrote about the Best Foundations For Women Over 40.
But even the best foundations need a little help, and that’s where the right primer comes in.
Ideally we’re looking for something that’s not drying and provides the right kind of moisture. One that will smooth and plump skin, but also melds with skin easily so makeup stays on your face and doesn’t slide off. Also very helpful: a bit of filling and blurring to make sure foundation doesn’t sink into fine lines and wrinkles or larger pores.
I’ve tested all of these personally and keep them in rotation depending on the foundation I’m wearing, climate I’m in and what activities I’ll be doing. Read on to find which one will work for you!
This is my favorite primer to wear either for evenings out or when I know I’m going to be indoors for most of the day. I’ve been using Mally’s primer for about 5 years now and it’s never let me down. It moisturizes without being greasy, fills and smoothes fine lines and pores and plays well with nearly all of my foundations whether oil or water-based.
I apply it by warming it slightly by swirling in the palm of my hand with a finger before patting it in around my face, concentrating on the center and T-zone.
Smooths and grips makeup so it lasts all day, even in humid weather. For a truly flawless finish, pair with Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Foundation.
This is my favorite primer for daytime, since it contains a generous amount of SPF. Unlike most sunscreens though, it’s velvety soft and never greasy. Sometimes I’ll even wear it on its own with just a bit of concealer and do the rest of my face.
This is the primer I wore while sightseeing on my honeymoon in Southeast Asia. My makeup stayed put and looked great for hours despite the heat and humidity, and my skin was protected from harmful rays. It’s protected my skin in other sunny locales like Vegas, Australia and Arizona.
A high-quality blurring primer that also has nourishing skincare ingredients. I also apply this by warming it up a bit and patting and pressing into my skin but because of the SPF I use this one all over my face, always.
The only downside to it is that at times it can pill when using very liquid water-based foundations. I’ve managed to counteract that by applying with a Beauty Blender and bouncing the foundation on. My favorites to wear with this are Josie Maran Vibrancy Argan Oil Foundation Fluid and By Terry Terrybly Densiliss Wrinkle Control Serum Foundation.
A quality budget option that smooths and blurs, while providing some additional moisture. Pairs well with L.A. Girl PRO Coverage HD High-Definition Long Wear Illuminating Foundation.
Don’t let the tiny golden flecks in the bottle scare you, this won’t cover your face in glitter. What it does do is smooth, grip makeup and makes you look radiant. Perfect for that “lit from within” look and ideal if dullness is among your skin concerns. I love it for special occasions or when I know I’ll be photographed. An investment primer, for sure, but a worthwhile one that delivers. I love wearing it with my Armani Beauty Luminous Silk foundation for maximum radiance.
Intensely moisturizing and gripping, this one’s a humid weather hero. Only downsides are no blurring or SPF, but still a favorite of mine, especially if I’m wearing foundation that already has SPF in it, such as IT Cosmetics CC Cream or La Mer The Soft Fluid Longwear Foundation.
