If you’re reading this and are over 40 or approaching it, I don’t need to tell you that your skin is probably undergoing some major changes, if it hasn’t already. While younger women can definitely also have drier skin, it’s not the only thing we might have to think about now.
Loss of elasticity, wrinkles and dullness might also be more noticeable and the reality is that the wrong foundation can make all of those look worse. So how to find a foundation that works for your skin?
I highly recommend staying away from matte formulas. On more mature skin they can not only be more drying but also look flat on the skin. Choose a satiny formula instead or one with a dewy finish to bring moisture and vibrancy back to your skin.
These are my personal favorites that I’ve tried and tested myself, and you’re sure to find one (or two!) that you’ll also love.
This first one on the list really took me by surprise. I’d never thought of using an oil-based foundation, but for drier skin this one delivers. Surprisingly light and buildable, it offers medium to full coverage that’s never greasy, cakey or heavy. I like to buff it in with a makeup brush or use a Beauty Blender to sheer it out a little more. (via Sephora, $45)
A budget-friendly drugstore classic for a reason. With 38 shades and a silky, blendable formula that’s easy to layer AND provides SPF 17, this base covers plenty of bases. (via Ulta, $10.99)
If you only invest in one foundation, let this be it. Expensive? Yes. Amazingly effective? Absolutely. This serum texture foundation glides over skin, doesn’t settle into wrinkles and leaves a satiny, soft-focus finish. Skin-loving ingredients nourish your complexion and deliver anti-aging benefits while you wear it. I swear by it when I want my skin to look flawless but not like I’m wearing anything on my face. (via Saks Fifth Avenue, $116)
I probably go through about two tubes of this a year, and especially on sunnier days, it’s a favorite. High SPF and full coverage with a natural finish make it easy to use and love. It’s my favorite one and done when I want to protect my skin from the sun’s rays. I like to use the Sephora PRO Foundation Brush to apply. (via Sephora, $39.50)
Another budget-friendly option, LA Girl’s foundation provides long-lasting full coverage without heaviness. Easy to sheer out with a Beauty Blender as well. Paraben-free and cruelty-free, this drugstore wonder really gives you a lot of bang for your buck. (via Ulta, $8.99)
This is an ideal foundation if one of your major concerns is dullness. It brightens skin beautifully and leaves a satiny and sheer natural looking finish. If you’re feeling especially confident in your skin, a sheer layer of this with some spot concealing looks incredibly skin-like and natural. (via Armani Beauty, $64)
A longtime favorite of mine, this medium coverage formula is great for nights out and when I know I’ll be photographed. Looks amazing in person too. Protip: one of my favorite things to do with this foundation is mix equal parts of it with the Armani Luminous Silk to give a soft-focus finish with a bit more coverage. (via Sephora, $43)
I didn’t want to love this foundation as much as I do, but here we are. The first time I tested this out, I was about to fly out on a 14 hour flight to Asia and when I landed my skin looked as amazing as it did when it was applied. You know if it’s from La Mer it’s not exactly going to be a bargain, and now I mostly save it for special occasions. The SPF 20 is an added bonus. One caveat: it does have a rather strong floral fragrance to it so if your skin is very sensitive or reactive to fragrance I don’t recommend it. Apart from that, it’s another investment foundation that will leave your skin looking radiant with medium to full coverage. (via Saks Fifth Avenue, $120)
