It’s easy to write a post about sunscreen now that the days are getting longer, warmer and sunnier. However, the reality is that SPF should be a daily part of our skincare routine, even if it’s cold and overcast. And don’t forget to apply to your neck, décolleté and the backs of your hands too!
Consistent and correct use of sunscreen is not only one of the easiest and most low-cost ways to prevent signs of aging such as wrinkles and uneven pigmentation, it also protects against skin cancer.
The skin on your face is more delicate than on your body, so while you could just slap on some Coppertone and call it a day, chances are you’ll have to deal with a few unpleasant extras. Namely, a heavy and greasy feel that doesn’t play well with makeup, a white cast to the face and possible skin irritation.
These sunscreens are all ones I’ve tried and tested myself and I love each of them for different reasons. Read on to see why…

Best for Glowing Skin: Glossier Daily Sunscreen SPF 30
Fully embracing the Glossier aesthetic, this sunscreen leaves no white cast and absorbs nicely, so it works well under makeup. However, on days when I’m feeling good about my skin, I’ll just wear it with no foundation and some concealer, blush, mascara and lip gloss. It imparts that trademark “Glossier Glow” that looks dewy and youthful, not greasy.
Best for Very Dry Skin: La Roche-Posay Anthelios Ultra Comfort Cream SPF 30
A sunscreen that feels more like a luxury skin cream, without the high price tag. Ideal also for sensitive skin, this is a gentle but highly effective sunscreen.
Best Primer with SPF: Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 30
I can’t even fully express how much I love this sunscreen, after using it for the last few years already. Not only does it offer good sun protection with zero white cast, it smooths and fills pores and small imperfections, as well as imparting a velvety, soft-focus blurring effect. Makeup glides over it, and I’ll sometimes wear it on makeup-free days as well when I’d prefer to look a bit more matte rather than glowy. Pro-tip: apply by warming up between fingers, then pat into skin with fingertips. Makeup will look flawless and last all day.
Best for Breakout-Prone Skin: La Roche-Posay Anthelios Clear Skin Oil Free SPF 60
An oil-free formulation that won’t dry out or irritate skin, with a high level of protection.
Best for Oily or Combination Skin: Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence Sunscreen SPF50+ PA+++
I first discovered this Japanese sunscreen during a trip to Thailand several years ago, when I realized I’d forgotten to pack any in my carry-on. It was so unlike any sunscreen I was used to: light, absorbed easily, not greasy, high sun protection and no white cast! It’s still a favorite that I keep in rotation and I love recommending it to others. One caveat: the formula does contain some alcohol, so I wouldn’t recommend it for very dry skin.
Which of these have you tried? Any recommendations you have that you think I may have left out? let me know below in the comments!
