1. “Wonder” by R.J. Palacio
Auggie was born with a facial difference, and he wants nothing more than to fit in. His story is first told from his point of view, then cycles through the points of views of his classmates, family and others. A deeply empathetic read about the value of acceptance from others as well as yourself.
2. Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman
Finding love can be awkward and difficult enough as it is, for Eleanor it’s even more so. Until she decides to open her heart, to a fellow who might be even more awkward than she is.
3. The Keeper of Lost Things by Ruth Hogan
A deeply moving debut novel about finding and losing ourselves, the connections that bind us and a world of endless possibilities through the lens of grief.
4. Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg
A modern classic, if you’ve seen the film but haven’t read the book yet, now is the time to fix that. A story about love and deep friendship, also featuring great food and a murder mystery.
5. Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli
After years of being homeschooled, Stargirl arrives at Mica Area High School in a burst of life and color to the deeply conformist school. It’s a very human and emotional tale about the often cruel and fleeting nature of popularity, as well as a celebration of being yourself. For ages 12+.
6. One Day in December by Josie Silver
A book that will make you a believer in love at first sight. Laurie locks eyes with a stranger while she’s on a bus. The bus drives away and she loses him, but one year later, Laurie meets a man named Jack at a party and realizes he was the stranger she saw from the bus. But there’s a catch and we watch their story play out over the next ten years.
